IVF-ICSI

In Vitro Fertilisation with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

IVF is a specialised treatment that involves fertilising eggs with sperm in the Assisted Reproduction laboratory to create healthy embryos. One of these embryos is transferred to the uterus, while the remaining embryos are frozen for future treatments.

Depending on the needs of each patient, IVF can be performed using Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). With the ICSI technique, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg to achieve fertilisation.

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is an advanced Assisted Reproduction technique that ensures fertilisation, even in severe cases of male infertility. The embryologists at FIV Valencia have extensive experience in IVF-ICSI treatments, guaranteeing the best results in complex cases.

In conventional IVF, eggs and sperm are placed together in a controlled environment to optimise the conditions for successful fertilisation. By contrast, with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), a sperm is microinjected directly into an egg under controlled laboratory conditions, overcoming barriers to fertilisation.

Who is IVF-ICSI Recommended For?

IVF-ICSI can be an effective solution for many individuals experiencing infertility. After a diagnosis, your doctor at FIV Valencia will assess whether this microinjection technique is the best option for you.

At FIV Valencia, every case is unique. We provide personalised diagnoses and tailored treatment plans for each patient.

IVF-ICSI is recommended in the following cases:

  • Male-factor infertility: Severe sperm quality or quantity issues
  • Previous failures with conventional IVF
  • Use of frozen eggs
  • Valuable semen samples, such as for oncology patients

The IVF-ICSI Process: How Does It Work?

This procedure involves injecting a single sperm directly into the egg, ensuring a controlled and effective fertilisation process. IVF with ICSI involves several key steps before, during, and after the procedure. The FIV Valencia team will support you throughout every stage of your treatment:

Preparation Phase

During your first visit, FIV Valencia offers a personalised fertility diagnosis. Through the Individualised Diagnostic Study (EDI), we evaluate your fertility and that of your partner, examine your medical history, and develop a tailored treatment plan. This approach ensures comprehensive care, recommending the necessary techniques to help you achieve your dream of becoming a parent.

Ovarian Stimulation

To increase the chances of pregnancy, your doctor will prescribe the necessary medication to stimulate your ovaries. The gonadotropin (FSH) medication plan is customised to encourage the development of one to three follicles, where your eggs are located.

We will monitor your ovarian development through transvaginal ultrasounds and blood tests to ensure proper follicular growth.

Egg Retrieval: Follicular Puncture

When the eggs have matured, the retrieval procedure, called follicular puncture, is scheduled. This procedure is performed under mild sedation and ultrasound guidance.

In the laboratory, our biologists assess the quality and maturity of your eggs to ensure readiness for fertilisation. If necessary, we will discuss the option of using donor eggs. FIV Valencia has its own egg donor bank to select the most suitable donor for you.

Sperm Sample Preparation for IVF

In IVF-ICSI treatments, sperm samples are typically collected on the same day as egg retrieval. If the sperm quality is good, it is processed in the laboratory and used immediately or frozen for later use.

If natural sperm collection is not possible, sperm can be retrieved surgically. If the sperm is incapable of fertilising, donor sperm may be considered for the IVF treatment.

IVF with ICSI: Laboratory Procedure

After the gametes are retrieved, fertilisation is carried out in the laboratory by experienced embryologists. In IVF-ICSI, a single sperm is directly injected into the egg to achieve fertilisation.

Embryo Development and Selection

Following fertilisation, embryos are carefully monitored as they grow in the incubator in our laboratory. Their development is evaluated over several days, and the healthiest, most viable embryos are selected for transfer. High-quality embryos not transferred are cryopreserved for future treatments.

If there is a risk of genetic abnormalities or previous implantation failures, Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) can be performed to select embryos without genetic anomalies, significantly improving IVF success rates. Your doctor will advise you if genetic testing is necessary for your treatment at FIV Valencia.

Embryo Transfer

Once the embryos reach the optimal development stage, they are transferred to the uterus. The embryo transfer procedure is quick and performed under ultrasound guidance in our clinic. A catheter is used to place the embryo directly into the uterus.

Rest and Monitoring

After the embryo transfer, a brief rest of about 30 minutes in the clinic is recommended before resuming normal activities. Strenuous exercise should be avoided.

Luteal Phase Support

After the transfer, your doctor may recommend progesterone supplements to support the uterine lining, creating optimal conditions for embryo implantation and a successful pregnancy.

Pregnancy Test and Follow-Up After IVF-ICSI

Approximately 14 days after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test will be conducted to confirm the result. Beta-hCG levels are measured in blood or urine. If positive, an ultrasound will be scheduled 7–10 days later to confirm the pregnancy.

Costs of Specialised Laboratory Techniques

At FIV Valencia, the doctor will recommend the techniques necessary to maximise the success rate of your treatment in a fully personalised way.

In our clinic, the choice of fertilisation technique (conventional IVF or ICSI) does not affect the overall price. The cost remains the same for both methods.

During your initial consultation, we will provide a detailed cost breakdown, so you can make an informed decision about incorporating these advanced methods into your treatment plan.

IVF-ICSI
FAQs

How long does IVF-ICSI treatment take?

The duration of IVF treatment depends on the individual’s circumstances and the number of cycles required. At FIV Valencia, the process typically takes 30–45 days from the first visit to embryo transfer.

What is the age limit for IVF-ICSI?

If ovarian reserve or egg quality is insufficient, egg donation may be recommended. After age 42, success rates for IVF with your own eggs drop significantly.

What are the benefits of IVF-ICSI?
  • High success rates for various fertility challenges
  • Particularly effective for male-factor infertility
  • Helps overcome infertility caused by blocked fallopian tubes, male infertility, etc.
  • Option to use donor eggs or sperm
  • Suitable for couples, single women, and same-sex couples
  • Enables genetic testing to reduce hereditary disease risks
Is IVF-ICSI painful?

Patients are supported by a specialised team to ensure comfort and tranquillity throughout the treatment. While mild discomfort may occur during ovulation induction, egg retrieval, or luteal support, most patients find the procedure tolerable.

Are there risks associated with IVF-ICSI?

IVF is a safe Assisted Reproduction treatment. At FIV Valencia, your doctor carefully adjusts your treatment plan to minimise risks, such as Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), which affects less than 1% of patients due to personalised medication protocols.

How can I prepare my body for IVF-ICSI?

Before starting IVF-ICSI, comprehensive diagnostic tests are essential, including:

  • Ovarian reserve testing
  • Uterine examination
  • Semen analysis (for heterosexual couples)
  • Infectious disease screening

Adopting healthy lifestyle habits is also crucial:

  • Maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.
  • Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption.
  • Reduce caffeine intake.
  • Manage stress with relaxation techniques.
  • Take supplements like folic acid as advised by your doctor.
