Conventional In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)
Understand Your Fertility – 100% Focused on You
Conventional In Vitro Fertilisation is an Assisted Reproduction treatment with high success rates. This procedure is one of the most effective options for many individuals unable to achieve pregnancy naturally.
FIV Valencia is one of the most experienced centres in Spain for Conventional In Vitro Fertilisation, offering a natural fertilisation process in a controlled environment. It combines advanced reproductive technology with a minimally invasive approach to assisted fertilisation, tailored for couples with moderately affected fertility.
Our personalised medical diagnosis and the high standards of our laboratory are key factors in achieving the best results in IVF treatments at FIV Valencia: 100% tailored to you.
What is Conventional In Vitro Fertilisation?
Conventional IVF is Recommended For:
- Unexplained infertility after prolonged attempts
- Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- Normal or slightly altered sperm parameters
- Couples preferring a less invasive procedure
- Women with a low ovarian reserve seeking a more natural approach
The Conventional IVF Process: How Does it Work?
Conventional IVF facilitates fertilisation by allowing sperm and eggs to meet in a controlled environment, closely mimicking natural body conditions. This approach minimises interventions with gametes.
At FIV Valencia, we guide you through every step of your treatment:
After retrieving the gametes, fertilisation occurs in the laboratory under the supervision of experienced embryologists. In Conventional IVF, the eggs are incubated with a specific concentration of sperm, allowing fertilisation to occur as naturally as possible.
After fertilisation, embryos are carefully monitored as they grow in the incubator. Their development is evaluated over several days, and the highest-quality embryos are selected for transfer. Unused high-quality embryos are cryopreserved for future treatments.
If there is a risk of genetic abnormalities or previous implantation failures, Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) may be performed to select embryos without genetic anomalies, significantly improving success rates. Your doctor will advise you whether genetic testing is necessary for your Assisted Reproduction treatment.
After the transfer, your doctor may recommend progesterone supplements to support the uterine lining, creating the best conditions for implantation and a successful pregnancy.
Approximately 14 days after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test will be conducted to confirm the result. This involves measuring beta-hCG levels in blood or urine. If positive, an ultrasound will be scheduled 7–10 days later to confirm the pregnancy.
Once embryos reach the optimal development stage, they are transferred to the uterus. The embryo transfer procedure is quick and is performed in our clinic under ultrasound guidance. A catheter is used to place the embryo directly into the uterus.
After the transfer, a brief rest of 30 minutes in a private room is recommended before resuming normal activities. Strenuous exercise should be avoided.
During your first visit, FIV Valencia offers a personalised fertility diagnosis. Through the Individualised Diagnostic Study (EDI), we will evaluate your fertility and that of your partner, examine your medical history, and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This approach ensures comprehensive care, recommending the necessary techniques to help you achieve your dream of becoming a parent.
To increase the chances of pregnancy, your doctor will prescribe medication to stimulate your ovaries. The gonadotropin (FSH) medication plan will be tailored to encourage the development of one to three follicles, where your eggs are located.
We will monitor your ovarian development through transvaginal ultrasounds and blood tests to ensure your follicles are developing properly.
When at least one follicle reaches the appropriate size (typically 18mm or larger), ovulation will be triggered with a human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) injection. Within 36–48 hours, your eggs will be released, and the best time for retrieval (follicular puncture) will be scheduled.
Egg retrieval is performed in the clinic’s operating room under mild sedation and ultrasound guidance. Once collected, our biologists will evaluate the quality and maturity of your eggs to ensure they are ready for fertilisation. If needed, we will discuss the option of using donor eggs. FIV Valencia has its own egg donor bank to select the most suitable donor for you.
Sperm samples are usually collected on the same day as egg retrieval. If the sperm quality is good, it is processed in the laboratory and used immediately for fertilisation or frozen for future use.
If natural sperm collection is not possible, we can retrieve sperm surgically. If the sperm cannot fertilise the eggs, we will discuss the option of using donor sperm with you.
Costs of Special Laboratory Techniques
Although special laboratory techniques increase the overall treatment cost, the added benefits for enhancing the chances of pregnancy are significant. Costs vary depending on the specific techniques used and the case's complexity. At FIV Valencia, we provide a detailed cost breakdown during your initial consultation to help you make an informed decision on
incorporating these advanced methods into your treatment plan.
Conventional IVF
FAQs
How long does Conventional IVF treatment take?
The duration depends on individual circumstances and the number of cycles needed. At FIV Valencia, the process typically takes 30–45 days from the first visit to embryo transfer.
What is the age limit for Conventional IVF?
If ovarian reserve or egg quality is insufficient for IVF with your own gametes, egg donation may be considered. Success rates for IVF with your own eggs drop significantly after age 42.
What are the advantages of Conventional IVF?
- High success rates for a variety of fertility issues
- Less invasive and more natural than ICSI
- Option to use donor eggs or sperm
- Suitable for heterosexual couples, single women, and same-sex couples
- Ability to perform genetic testing to reduce hereditary disease risks
Is IVF painful?
IVF is generally well-tolerated. Mild discomfort may occur during ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, or luteal support, but these are usually temporary.
Are there risks associated with IVF?
IVF is a safe treatment. Your doctor will monitor and adjust your plan to minimise risks such as Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), which occurs in less than 1% of patients due to personalised medication protocols.
How to prepare your body for Conventional IVF?
Before starting IVF, a comprehensive diagnostic study is essential, including:
- Ovarian reserve testing
- Uterine examination
- Semen analysis (for heterosexual couples)
- Infectious disease screening
Adopting a healthy lifestyle is also recommended:
- Maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.
- Quit smoking and limit alcohol intake.
- Reduce caffeine consumption.
- Manage stress with relaxation techniques.
- Take supplements like folic acid as advised by your doctor.
