Fertility Treatments with Donated Sperm

Hope Starts Here: Building Your Family with Donor Sperm at FIV Valencia

Fertility treatment with donated sperm offers a promising path to parenthood for individuals and couples who face challenges conceiving naturally. Whether due to severe male infertility factors, single parenthood by choice, or same-sex female partnerships, using donor sperm provides a safe and effective option for building a family. Through procedures like Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) or In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), donated sperm helps many families successfully achieve pregnancy.

How does fertility treatment with donated sperm work?

Fertility treatment with donated sperm can be applied in various Assisted Reproduction procedures:

  • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): A straightforward fertility treatment where the donor sperm is placed directly in the woman's uterus at the time of ovulation, increasing the chances of fertilization.
  • In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF): A more advanced procedure in which the woman’s eggs are fertilized with donor sperm outside the body in a lab. Once fertilization occurs, the resulting embryos are transferred to the uterus to attempt pregnancy.
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): Part of the IVF process, where a single sperm is directly injected into an egg to promote fertilization. ICSI is often used in cases of complex infertility.

Cost of Fertility Treatments with Donated Sperm

The cost of fertility treatments with donated sperm varies depending on the procedure type, number of cycles, and any necessary tests or medications. Common treatments include IUI, often more affordable, and IVF, which incurs higher costs due to its complexity. Expenses such as donor sperm fees, hormonal medications, and lab tests also contribute to the overall cost.

  • ROPA - Shared Motherhood

We’re Marta and Enrica, an Italian couple who decided to start a family. In Italy, we couldn’t access Assisted Reproduction treatments, so we chose FIV Valencia. Having Italian-speaking doctors and staff made us feel safe from the beginning. Discovering the ROPA method was thrilling, as it allowed both of us to actively participate in the process. The clinic also made everything easy with their free online consultations and partnerships for accommodation and transport, making the journey smoother and more special.

I came to FIV Valencia with high expectations, and from the start, the care was exceptional: from the reception staff to the doctor, psychologist, and nurses. Every step was exciting, especially the transfer and hearing the heartbeat. Today, I can say it was worth it, and I’d do it again a thousand times.

How IVF with Donated Sperm Works

Using donor sperm in IVF involves taking fertility medications to stimulate the ovaries and to prepare the eggs for retrieval. Once the eggs are collected, they are fertilized with donor sperm in our lab. After fertilization, the healthiest embryos are transferred to the uterus for implantation. An IVF cycle usually lasts around six weeks, although this may vary depending on individual needs and menstrual cycles.

Finding Your Ideal Sperm Donor

Donors are anonymous and are selected by FIV Valencia specialists. Our medical team chooses the most suitable donor for each patient and performs extensive medical screenings to ensure they meet our rigorous standards.

Our donors are selected based on several factors, including:

  • Age

  • Ethnicity

  • Height and weight

  • Eye and hair colour

  • Blood type

  • Family medical history

  • Genetic compatibility testing (optional)

Screening Process for Sperm Donors

At FIV Valencia, we ensure that every donor meets our strict criteria. Here's how we conduct our screening:

  • Medical Screening: We conduct a full health check, including blood tests for infectious diseases like HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis. We also screen for other STIs like gonorrhoea and chlamydia.

  • Genetic Testing: Advanced genetic tests ensure the sperm is free from mutations that could lead to hereditary conditions, such as cystic fibrosis or spinal muscular atrophy.

  • Counselling for Donors: Our clinic provides support and guidance to donors throughout the donation process.

Embryo Transfer and Post-Implantation

Once the embryos are ready, we transfer one or two of the healthiest embryos to the uterus. This is a simple, painless procedure that does not require anaesthesia, and patients can resume daily activities the same day. Approximately 14 days after the transfer, a blood pregnancy test confirms if implantation was successful.

Throughout the process, FIV Valencia offers continuous support to patients, answering questions and guiding them through each step of the treatment. Our goal is to ensure you feel informed, comfortable, and supported on your journey to parenthood.

Egg Retrieval and Sperm Sample

Once the donor’s eggs have matured, they are retrieved through a minimally invasive procedure under sedation. On the same day, the recipient’s partner provides a sperm sample for fertilisation, or previously frozen sperm is used.

Egg Fertilisation and Embryo Culture

After retrieval, the donor’s eggs are fertilised in the Assisted Reproduction laboratory using either the partner’s sperm or donor sperm. Fertilisation may be carried out through conventional IVF or, if necessary, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). The embryos are cultured in an incubator for 2 to 5 days, and our embryologists select the healthiest embryos for transfer.

Embryo Transfer

Once the embryos have reached the optimal development stage, they are transferred to the uterus. The embryo transfer is a quick procedure performed in our clinic’s operating theatre under ultrasound guidance. A catheter is used to place the embryos directly into the uterus.

After the embryo transfer, it is recommended to rest for about 30 minutes at the clinic. Following this brief rest, you can resume your normal activities, though strenuous exercise should be avoided.

Luteal Phase Support

After the embryo transfer, your doctor may recommend progesterone supplements to maintain the uterine lining, ensuring the best conditions for the fertilised embryo to implant and to achieve a successful pregnancy.

Pregnancy Test and Follow-Up After Egg Donation IVF

About 14 days after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is conducted to confirm the outcome. The test measures beta-hCG levels in blood or urine. If positive, an ultrasound will be scheduled 7 to 10 days later to confirm the pregnancy.

FAQs

What information is available in a sperm donor’s profile?

Sperm donor profiles include details such as age and blood group. However, additional information is typically not provided to maintain the donor's anonymity, as required by Spanish law.

What are the risks of using donor sperm?

Using donor sperm is generally safe, but there are certain risks to consider. These include the possibility of multiple pregnancies (if more than one embryo is transferred) and the very rare risk of transmitting genetic conditions or infections, despite the stringent selection process. Our clinic ensures all donors undergo thorough medical and genetic screening to minimise these risks.

Do sperm donors undergo genetic testing?

Yes, all sperm donors at our clinic go through a rigorous genetic screening process to identify potential hereditary conditions or genetic mutations that could be passed on to a child. These tests screen for conditions such as cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, and other hereditary diseases.

Can I know a sperm donor’s educational level?

No, the educational level of sperm donors is generally not included in their profiles. This information is part of the profile but is protected by donor anonymity laws.

How can I find a sperm donor for Artificial Insemination?

Our clinic selects anonymous donors for our patients from our own sperm bank.

Is IVF with donor sperm suitable for everyone?

IVF with donor sperm is an excellent option for many individuals and couples, including those experiencing male infertility, single women, and lesbian couples. However, it may not be suitable for everyone. Your doctor will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your medical and fertility history to determine if this option is right for you.

Can I undergo donor sperm insemination without medication?

Yes, it is possible to perform insemination with donor sperm without fertility medication, a process known as "natural AI." This option is generally suitable for women who ovulate regularly. Your doctor will assess whether this approach is appropriate for your specific circumstances.

Can I use the same sperm donor to ensure my children are biological siblings?

Yes, if you wish to have future children using the same sperm donor to ensure they are biological siblings, this is possible as long as it is planned in advance. At FIV Valencia, we offer this option subject to availability. Speak with our team to explore this possibility.
