Sperm Selection

Achieving the Best for the Future: Selecting the Optimal Sperm to Create Your Little Miracle

At FIV Valencia, we utilize the latest technology in Assisted Reproduction to help couples achieve pregnancy. In cases involving male infertility, we offer various techniques to improve the quality of sperm or to select the best sperm for fertilization, thus increasing the chances of a successful In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) outcome.

How Does the MACS Technique Work for Sperm Selection?

The magnetic cell sorting process to select healthy sperm for an IVF treatment involves these steps:

Identification of Altered Sperm

We use a protein called Annexin V, which binds to apoptotic or damaged sperm. This protein is attached to small magnetic particles.

Magnetic Sorting

The treated sperm sample is passed through a special column with a magnetic field. Here, the magnetic particles capture and retain the apoptotic sperm, effectively filtering them out.

Selection of the Best Sperm

Only healthy sperm make it through the process. These are then used to fertilize the eggs, providing the best opportunity for creating healthy embryos.

When is the MACS Technique Recommended?

The MACS sperm selection technique is recommended in IVF treatments in the following cases:

  • High DNA Fragmentation: When tests indicate a high level of DNA fragmentation in the sperm.
  • Previous Fertilization Issues: If previous IVF or ICSI cycles did not achieve fertilization or had low fertilization rates.
  • Recurrent Miscarriages: For couples who have experienced multiple miscarriages without an apparent cause, as sperm quality may be a contributing factor.
  • Arrested Embryo Development: When embryos stopped developing in previous treatments, which may indicate sperm quality issues.
  • Advanced Maternal Age: Selecting the best quality sperm may increase the chances of a successful pregnancy in cases of older maternal age.

What Are the Benefits of the MACS Technique?

  • Increases the Chances of IVF Success: Using MACS to select the healthiest sperm can improve the likelihood of successful fertilization and embryo development.
  • Reduces Risks: Higher-quality sperm may reduce the risk of miscarriage, thus improving the chances of a healthy pregnancy.
  • Offers Peace of Mind: Knowing that the best possible sperm are being used provides greater confidence during your IVF treatment.

How Does Sperm Capacitation Work?

The sperm capacitation process to select healthy sperm for an IVF treatment involves these steps:

Selection of the Best Sperm

We use specialised techniques to select the sperm with the highest motility and normal appearance, removing debris, dead sperm, and other unwanted cells. This step is crucial as it mimics the natural process, where only the strongest sperm reach the egg.

Preparation for Fertilization

During capacitation, the sperm undergo changes that make them more capable of fertilizing the egg. These changes allow the sperm to penetrate the outer layers of the egg, which is necessary for successful fertilization.

When is Sperm Capacitation Used?

Sperm capacitation is used in several Assisted Reproduction treatments to achieve the best possible success rate:

  • In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF): To prepare sperm for fertilizing eggs in the lab.
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): To select the best sperm for direct injection into the egg, especially when there are issues with sperm quality.
  • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): To place the best sperm directly into the uterus, increasing the chances of fertilization.

Why is Sperm Capacitation Important?

  • Improves the Chances of Fertilization: Selecting and preparing the healthiest sperm increases the probability of successful fertilization.
  • Mimics Natural Processes: This process replicates the natural changes that sperm undergo in the body, ensuring they are in the best condition to fertilize the egg.
  • Greatly Enhances the Outcome in Male Infertility Cases: Sperm capacitation helps address certain male infertility issues by ensuring that only the best sperm are used.

Costs of Specialised Laboratory Techniques

While special laboratory techniques may increase the overall cost of IVF treatment, it’s essential to consider the benefits they offer. The costs vary depending on the specific techniques used and the complexity of each case. In our clinic, we provide patients with a transparent, detailed breakdown of these costs. We offer all the information necessary to help you make an

informed decision about including these advanced methods in your treatment plan. For more information, please see our price list.

Sperm Selection

FAQs

What is sperm selection in fertility treatments?

Sperm selection involves choosing the healthiest, most motile sperm from a semen sample to enhance the chances of successful fertilization and to improve embryo quality during IVF or ICSI procedures.

Why is sperm selection important in IVF/ICSI?

Selecting the best-quality sperm improves fertilization rates and the likelihood of creating healthy embryos, which can be crucial for overcoming specific male infertility issues, such as low sperm count, poor motility, or abnormal sperm morphology.

What techniques are used for sperm selection?

Various techniques can be used for sperm selection, including the swim-up method, density gradient centrifugation, Magnetic-Activated Cell Sorting (MACS), and microfluidic sperm selection.

What is the MACS technique in sperm selection?

MACS (Magnetic-Activated Cell Sorting) uses magnetic fields to separate apoptotic sperm (those with high DNA fragmentation) from healthy sperm selected for fertilization.

What is microfluidic sperm selection?

Microfluidic sperm selection uses channels that mimic the female reproductive tract to select the most motile and healthiest sperm with minimal DNA fragmentation.

When is advanced sperm selection recommended?

Advanced sperm selection is recommended in cases of male infertility, high DNA fragmentation, repeated IVF or ICSI failures, recurrent miscarriages, or when there are issues with sperm motility and morphology.

Can sperm selection improve pregnancy success rates?

Yes, using the healthiest, most viable sperm can increase the chances of successful fertilization, improve embryo quality, and enhance the likelihood of pregnancy in Assisted Reproduction treatments.

Does sperm selection reduce the risk of genetic abnormalities?

While sperm selection can help minimize the risk of using sperm with fragmented DNA, it cannot completely eliminate the risk of genetic abnormalities. However, it does improve the overall quality of the sperm used in fertilization.

Is sperm selection necessary for all IVF/ICSI cycles?

Basic sperm selection techniques (density gradient or swim-up) are used in all cycles, but advanced sperm selection (MACS or microfluidics) is not always necessary. At FIV Valencia, your doctor will determine the recommended techniques based on semen analysis and your treatment history, providing all the information needed to make the best choice for you.
