Gamete and Embryo Donation-Reception Unit
The Gamete and Embryo Donation and Reception Unit at FIV Valencia is composed of a multidisciplinary team of gynaecologists, embryologists, nurses, and a psychologist, dedicated to the selection and matching of gamete and embryo donors with patients. This team is responsible for ensuring safety at genetic, infectious, and psychological levels throughout the donation process.
In Assisted Reproduction, egg, sperm, and embryo donation is one of the treatments with the highest success rates. Many individuals need gamete donation to achieve pregnancy. In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) with egg donation, or ovodonation, is the solution for women whose own eggs cannot result in pregnancy, either due to age or medical conditions.
Who needs gamete donation?
Sperm donation is recommended for women without a male partner, lesbian couples, or heterosexual couples where a male factor prevents pregnancy.
How are gamete donors selected?
At FIV Valencia, we maintain our own gamete bank. This allows us to personally select donors and guarantee the highest level of safety for our patients. The selection process for egg and sperm donors involves a series of exams and analyses that adhere to the strictest standards set by both national and international health authorities.
These include genetic tests for chromosomal abnormalities and hereditary autosomal recessive and/or X-linked diseases, performed using the “genetic compatibility test” or carrier screening. Infectious diseases are also ruled out by repeating tests with every donation.
Additionally, we have an in-house psychology team that supports patients during their treatment and conducts psychological assessments of donors.
Donor Matching: Finding the Best Donor for Each Patient
In Spain, gamete donation is a voluntary and anonymous act. Specialists at FIV Valencia thoroughly review and approve donors and then match each one to the most compatible patient. This matching process, handled by our clinic's team, follows strict medical and legal guidelines while taking into account the unique characteristics and needs of each patient.
IVF with gamete donation offers high success rates. The primary goals of the Donation Unit at FIV Valencia are to ensure maximum safety in terms of infectious and hereditary genetic diseases and to select the ideal donor for each patient based on both physical and genetic traits.
The FIV Valencia team carefully matches recipients with egg and/or sperm donors based on phenotypic characteristics, including ethnicity, eye colour, and hair colour. Upon request from the parents, genetic matching can also be considered.
